Parents' Guide to Primary Admissions

Admission to the Nursery
All children are entitled to 15 hours or 30 hours, free (government funded) nursery education, per week. All children are entitled to apply for a place at our nursery, to apply please complete an application form and return it to the school office. Application forms are available from the school office, or you can download one from the forms tab.

Abercrombie Nursery is fully inclusive, and places are not restricted to children in the normal area. However, where more applications are made than are available, places will be allocated in date of birth order and number of sessions applied for. Please note that parents do not have an automatic right to a place in their normal area school nursery. The rules on admission and appeal do not apply to nursery schools.

Applications for places should be made directly to the Abercrombie Primary School office, who will maintain a waiting list and contact you as soon as a place is available. Visits to our nursery are warmly encouraged.

Admission to Reception
It is expected that all children should begin full-time education in the September of the year in which they will be five years old. Our Pupil admission number (PAN) is 30.

Applications for places are handled by Derbyshire County Council under the co-ordinated admissions policy. The school has no authority to offer places.

Applications are made directly to Derbyshire County Council online at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/admissions or by telephone on 01629 533190.

The admissions team can be emailed at admissions@derbyshire.gov.uk

The application period begins in the middle of November and closes at midnight on a specific date in the middle of January. Offer letters of places allocated are sent out at the beginning of May.

Parents can apply for up to three choices and these must be for different schools.

The admissions team then apply strict criteria to each application.
1. Children in care
2. Children living within the normal area
3. Children whose siblings already attend the school at the time of application
4. Other children who have requested a place - usually based on distance from the school.

Please note children do not transfer automatically from our nursery to main school, a separate application must be made. Attendance at our nursery does not give priority for a place in reception, the normal admission criteria apply.

If parents are not allocated a place at our school, they can appeal against the decision at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/admissions or contact Call Derbyshire on 08456 058058. An independent panel will hear the appeal and the decision will be binding on the council and parents.

Admission into other year groups (In-year applications)
Applications for places into any other year group at Abercrombie Primary are made via www.derbyshire.gov.uk/admissions or by ringing 01629 533190. As we are a very popular school it is very unlikely that places would be available and it advisable to contact school to ascertain the current situation. An appeals process is available if a place is applied for and in the first instance unavailable.
