Homework and Spellings - Whole School Policy

Reading

Your child should always have a reading book in his/her book bag. Please listen to your child read at home as much as possible, at least 4 times per week. This doesn't always have to be their school reading book. Reading any type of text, such as magazines, comics, menus, street signs etc. can be just as valuable.

When you listen to your child read his/her school reading book, please make a comment (positive if possible) in their reading diary so that we know that they are reading at home regularly.

The children will be listened to reading at school regularly through many different activities, including a daily whole class guided reading session.

Maths

Maths homework will be given out every Friday and should be returned the following Wednesday. The work will be linked to something the children have been learning in class and may also be differentiated to suit each child's ability.

Pupils will also have times table practise as part of their weekly maths homework.  The government expectation is that pupils have a rapid recall of all of their times tables (up to 12 x 12) by the time they finish in Year 4.  We do practise at school but your support at home with this is really appreciated. On Fridays, there will be a times tables test.

Spellings

Each week your child will have spellings to learn.  Please help your child to learn their weekly spellings; these will be tested each Friday and new words will be given every term. We will send spelling test papers home so parents can see how their child did. We suggest Look, Cover, Write, Check when learning new spellings, sounding out each syllable in each word.

Children will also be learning 40 words each term for the Spelling Bee. These are made up of some of this term's spellings so there is nothing additional to learn.
