Science

Subject Lead is Mrs Johnson

At Abercrombie Primary School, we recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life. We also recognise the importance of a high-quality science education in teaching pupils about the world around them. As one of the core subjects taught in Primary Schools, we give the teaching and learning of science the prominence it requires. The scientific area of learning is concerned with increasing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of our world, whilst acquiring and developing specific skills and knowledge to help them think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and also an understanding of the uses and implications of science today, and for the future. It will develop the natural curiosity of the child, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence. We plan using the National Curriculum and we enhance the curriculum using progression grids. Subject progression grids are used to develop long term planning. Teachers use the long term planning to plan units of work and deliver individual lessons.

Young Science Ambassadors 2023-24

We are excited to be taking part in the national ‘Young Science Ambassadors’ scheme this year; a national scheme that allows pupils to take the lead in championing and raising the profile of science across the school.

Our Science Ambassadors have received training, and are now on hand to promote practical science throughout the school in a number of ways. For example:

  • Science show assemblies
  • Lunchtime science clubs
  • School fair stall
  • Playground interactive science show
  • Science week activities
  • Recording and reporting on science in school

We can't wait to show you the spectacular science in our school!
