Summer Term 1
Take a look at some of the amazing things we get up to in Year 2.
Our caterpillars have arrived!
Day 1 Today, Monday 19th April, our caterpillars have arrived. There are 10 of them. At the moment, they are very small, black and a little spiky looking.
Abercrombie Book Day
On Wednesday 21st April, it was our special book day.
We did lots of exciting things. In the morning, we watched a video called Caterpillar Shoes. It was brilliant but sadly no one had made the story into a book. So, we wrote our own book called Caterpillar Shoes for someone who was special to us.
Watch the video if you would like to and look at the first pages of our book.
Our class photograph for Abercrombie Book Day.
Some of us came dressed up as our favourite book character.
In the afternoon, we made reading dens and read lots of our favourite books. We also got the chance to swap a book with someone else in our class.
Day 8 Monday 26th April
Our caterpillars have grown much longer. They have already shed their skin because you can see little bits of black skin in the jar. The food at the bottom of the jar has been eaten and you can see some tiny threads of silk too.
Our Minibeast Hunt
We went up to the Forest School area in school to hunt for minibeasts. We couldn't believe what we found.
There were earthworms, slugs, a colony of ants, some spiders, a centipede, an earwig and lots and lots of woodlice.
Our caterpillars have grown and grown. They are now covered in spiky hairs and have a small black head. You can also see a yellowish stripe running down their body.
The caterpillars are getting ready to pupate! Four of them have gone to the top of the tub and are now hanging down from a piece of silk.
Friday 7th May
All our caterpillars have made pupae/chrysalises/cocoons.
We are so excited but we have know idea how long it will take them to change into butterflies.
Day 31 Wednesday 21st May
It has taken about 14 days for our caterpillars to change into butterflies. All of them have come out of their cocoons. They are beautiful with orange, black and white patches on them. They are also symmetrical!
Releasing our Butterflies
Look at our tadpoles.
We are excited to see what will happen to them. We know they are going to change.
Moving Minibeasts
We loved making these moving minibeasts.
Frogs
We used kitchen roll and a few other bits and pieces to make our own frogs!
The Minibeast Roadshow
Mr and Mrs Brown, Josh's mum and dad, came into school with their amazing collection of Minibeast. We looked at 19 different Minibeasts altogether plus 3 beautiful Hermann tortoises. There were about 3 or 4 different stick insects, newts, a bird eating spider, a milk snake, preying mantis, chocolate millipedes, a scorpion, land hermit crabs and cave crickets to name but a few. Look at the great pictures of us holding some of them.
